The Role of Tear Tape In The Corrugated Market

Corrugated Market; SRP

Issue Date: 31 March 2011

Tear tape leader Payne has underlined its global reputation in the corrugated industry with a successful presence at two prestigious international events.

Payne enhanced its profile in Asian markets by exhibiting its self-adhesive RippatapeTM in China for the first time, at SinoCorrugated 2011 in Shanghai.

The company’s innovative fully automated tape applicator system and Shelf-Ready Packaging (SRP) Edge Tape solutions were also the focus at FEFCO’s Technical Seminar in Munich, Germany.

Describing SinoCorrugated, Mike Love, Tear Tape category manager says: “SinoCorrugated is one of the largest business platforms for the global corrugated manufacturing industry.  Exhibiting for the first time in China at this prestigious exhibition gave use a great opportunity to meet our potential customers, as well as enabling  us to understand the market better.”As well as Chinese corrugators, Payne representatives Ellen Wu (China Sales Manager) and Bertrand Tellier (Director of Sales, Asia) welcomed visitors to the stand from India, Indonesia and Thailand.  Payne also took the opportunity to introduce its SRP Edge Tape solution into these markets.  SinoCorrugated 2011 attracted 22,000 international visitors over four days with its aim to help carton box manufacturers make informed purchasing decisions by alerting them to new products, the latest technology and emerging market trends.

“It was an ideal forum for RippatapeTM, which offers significant commercial and environmental advantages to manufacturers and brand owners requiring a versatile method for the easy opening of boxes and cartons,” adds Mike Love.

“We are fully committed to developing in the Asian market and we’re delighted with the response we had.”

Payne also had a significant presence at the FEFCO Technical Seminar in Munich, both exhibiting and presenting at a valuable seven-minute ‘spotlight session’  to an audience of over 400 participants. FEFCO's Technical Seminar is a conference and trade show which brings together corrugated product manufacturers from all over Europe.

The company was promoting both its fully automated tape applicator, the PRS-AS, and its innovative SRP Edge Tape system, which combines easy opening with on-shelf promotional opportunities.

Counting automated accurate head positioning and one touch lay-down among its benefits Payne’s PRS-AS system is the system of choice for corrugators wanting ease of use and the ability to apply tapes that match the latest corrugators’ lines.

Meanwhile the innovative dual-tape system SRP Edge Tape, using both Edge Tape and RippatapeTM, gives retailers a solution that can be opened safely, quickly and easily without damage to on-pack graphics or branding.

The use of a printed Edge Tape can improve on-shelf visibility and, if required, support own-label brand reinforcement without altering the box design. The end result is a professional, eye catching display packaging.

In the “spotlight session”, Paul Robertson (Sales Development Manager - EMEA Region) presented the SRP Edge Tape system to an audience of approximately 400 and the technology itself was demonstrated using a PRS-AS applicator unit located on the stand.

In closing Mike Love commented “Innovation is central to success in this highly competitive industry.  Both exhibitions and conferences proved ideal platforms to showcase our latest capabilities and make connections that will enable us to drive this industry forward”.

More about RippatapeTM

RippatapeTM is the original self-adhesive tear tape for opening cartons, boxes and courier envelopes. It provides a fast, no-knife method of opening corrugated and folded cartons.

Applied in-line at the point of manufacture to the inner liner of the board, RippatapeTM provides an intuitive, consistent and reliable opening method.

Users locate an easy-to-find tab and pull the RippatapeTM away from the box in a single motion that ensures no damage to the goods inside.

RippatapeTM enables secondary or transit packaging to be opened and products to be unloaded, quickly and without the use of a knife, increasing speed and reducing the cost impact of damaged goods and staff injuries.

It is also fully separable from the box or carton during the recycling process, supporting the sustainability targets of producers.

The tape itself is available in several widths (up to 20mm) and four gauges to suit customer needs.  Long reel lengths enable extended production runs to reduce the number of changeovers required.

More about Payne’s SRP Edge Tape solution

Payne’s solution involves the innovative use of a purpose-built applicator which applies two tapes to the corrugated board at the same point on the corrugator line during board production.

RippatapeTM is applied to the inner liner of the board, acting as the opening mechanism providing quick and easy access to the box contents without the need for knives.

Edge Tape is applied to the outer liner of the board, just below the point where the box is opened by the RippatapeTM.

It guides the tear as the box is opened, ensuring a clean finish.  And its printability provides additional opportunities for brand reinforcement or promotional messages.

The benefits of this dual-tape technology are considerable and Payne’s solution holds advantages for retailers, brand owners and corrugators.

When it comes to disposal of the packaging at the end of its life, both tapes are separated from the board during the recycling process ensuring that the recyclability of the board is not affected.
