Payne Wins Design Challenge Thanks To Total Show Visitors

Design Challenge Win

Issue Date: June 2010

Payne’s innovations in designer tear tape have been recognised by visitors to the Total Processing and Packaging 2010 exhibition held in May, when its entry into the show’s Design Challenge won the daily competition.

The Design Challenge, held in the Packaging Innovation Hub at the exhibition, gave a range of packaging experts – including leading manufacturers, design agencies, independent packaging professionals and students – a platform to present their ideas to a knowledgeable and receptive audience

Entrants were asked to consider opportunities for the creation of new products, market applications and consumer experiences.  Payne’s concept involved a novel application of its Designer Collection of printed tear tapes for fictional retailer Super X.

Payne showcased how a printed tape, applied in-line during the manufacturing process, could be used to deliver a number of different brand and promotional messages, pack security and easy opening for the consumer across an entire product range, regardless of packaging shape.

Crucially, the high impact design on the tape can be quickly and cost-effectively altered, enabling Super X to change its short-term promotions and brand messages without needing to change the overall packaging design. By changing the tape and not the pack design, considerable financial and environmental savings can also be made in reducing the costs of generating artworks and from out of date packaging stock.

For demonstration purposes, a ‘Four Seasons’ tape – offering vivid, colourful graphics of seasonal weather – was used, highlighting what can be achieved by Payne’s design studio and 10-station printer.

Visitors to the Packaging Innovation Hub each day were invited to assess the entries and vote each day for their preferred concept.  Payne received the most votes on the middle day of the exhibition, Wednesday 26th May, for which the company received a bottle of champagne.

“We are delighted that the many packaging professionals and opinion formers who visited Total responded so enthusiastically to the Designer Collection,” comments Mike Love Category Manager from Payne.  “The standard of competition in the Total Design Challenge was incredibly high, so to have been voted a winner is a real honour.”

Total Processing & Packaging 2010, which took place at the NEC from May 25th to 27th, is the UK’s largest integrated processing and packaging exhibition.
