Charity Begins At Work

Issue Date:  22 September 2010

Nottingham-based manufacturer Payne is proudly supporting the fundraising efforts of a number of its employees, who have raised thousands of pounds for good causes.

Planning & Logistics Manager Steve Leese, together with a Filtrona colleague, has completed an unusual challenge: to run 2010 miles within a year!  The idea was to raise a target of £10,000 for Orchid, the only UK-registered charity to focus entirely on the male-specific cancers.  So far they have run 2500 miles, with donations currently standing at just over £8000.  Further details can be found on the website: www.run4cancer.co.uk

Adrian Hutchinson, Coating Crew Leader at Payne, organised a sponsored bike ride on Saturday 19th June 2010, completed by 14 riders.  The event was designed to raise money for two charities that have helped Payne staff suffering from Cancer; Haywood House at the City Hospital and Treetops Hospice in Risley. Between them they have raised just over £6000 for the two charities.

Starting at the company’s Giltbrook factory at 7:20am, everyone had reached Skegness by 4.50pm, only about 20 minutes after the first arrival…a tribute to the team’s efforts in sticking together, rather than a measure of common standard of fitness!

Adrian Cudmore, Divisional Business Planning Manager – Coated & Security Products for Payne’s parent company Filtrona, is a keen amateur landscape photographer.  Following previous successful events, Adrian recently held an exhibition of his work at St Giles’ Church, West Bridgford, with all net proceeds going to charities Leukaemia Research (in memory of his father who died in 2008) and the Friary Drop-In, a charity for the homeless based in West Bridgford.

Nearly 50 framed images and over 750 greetings cards were sold.  When combined with Gift Aid and Corporate Matching Funding from Payne, the total raised was £5,300.  Adrian’s photography has now generated over £13,000 for charities since 2005.

Meanwhile, factory auxillary John Grainger, along with his wife, helped to organise a “Stars In Their Eyes” event to raise funds for the Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance service.  The show, along with a raffle and auction (to which Payne donated a couple of prizes), netted a haul of £935.91 for the charity.

Payne employees also participate in the Workplace Giving Scheme, designed to allow them to donate money pre-tax to charities of their choice.  In addition to the individual donations, every year the company selects a local charity to receive money from the scheme.  In 2010, Payne has chosen to donate £500 to the Lincolnshire & Nottingham Air Ambulance service.

“We’re always happy to support employees who are committed to fundraising, and we’re immensely proud that Steve the two Adrians and John have worked just as hard on their charity efforts as they do in the workplace!” comments Malcolm Waugh of Payne.
