Mass Qualification Confirms Payne's Smart Thinking

NVQ Awards

Issue Date: 22 January 2008

Local packaging business Payne has demonstrated its commitment to the development of its employees by arranging an NVQ training programme for staff at its factory in Giltbrook, Nottingham.  Devised by specialist training firm Peter Rowley Ltd, the programme has ensured that Payne’s manufacturing workforce has a formal national approval of competency as part of the company’s drive towards Continuous Improvement.

Based in Grimsby, Peter Rowley Ltd has a twelve-year track record in specialised CI training and implementation support.   The company has recently launched a marketing campaign in Nottingham and Payne was one of the first businesses to recognise the potential of their services.

The programme chosen consisted of three workshops which were designed to provide a solid understanding of Continuous Improvement, through areas such as waste management, workplace organisation and the importance of teamwork.  This combination of workshops is designed to provide a platform for the rollout of CI initiatives, with a solid understanding of the principles and drivers that allow a much greater level of contribution from staff.

Peter Rowley’s expert trainers were on-site to guide the candidates through the programme and assist in the completion of their NVQ portfolios.  Taking around a year to be fully completed, the programme resulted in almost all of Payne’s production, engineering and warehouse hourly paid staff achieving a National Vocational Qualification Level 2 in Business Improvement Techniques.

“Payne’s staff have been model students during the process,” comments Roy Knight, Lean Engineer at Peter Rowley Ltd.  “Their willingness to learn new techniques and the ability to put ideas into action will undoubtedly give Payne enhanced efficiency and a real competitive advantage in the future.”

Payne confirmed its satisfaction with both the students and trainers.  “It was vital that the training should not interfere with Payne’s daily production needs,” explains Operations and Quality Director Peter Bailey.  “To the credit of employees, they successfully combined the thought and effort required for the programme at the same time as carrying out their daily tasks and routines to ensure that it was ‘business as usual’ throughout the process.

“Peter Rowley Ltd has also done a tremendous job,” he adds.  “We are especially grateful to Roy Knight and Trevor Crookes of Peter Rowley Ltd, without whom we would not have been able to achieve such a fantastic success rate.”
