Rippatape provides an 'open and not shut' case
ISSUE DATE: 22 June 2006
Leading tear tape manufacturer Payne reports growing interest in the use of Rippatape - its easy opening system for the boxboard industry - as part of shelf-ready packaging (SRP) solutions.
Retailers are increasingly looking to SRP as an effective means of ensuring that stock is quickly transported from warehouse to store without compromising on-shelf appearance. SRP suppliers are working together with manufacturers and retailers to meet the criteria for successful shelf-ready solutions, both from the point of view of brand image and logistical efficiency.
One of the key areas of concern is the speed and safety with which SRP solutions can be converted from transit cases to display trays. It is this aspect that has led many corrugated manufacturers to look at Rippatape. The tape is applied during board manufacture to enable an integral opening device that can be opened in seconds, leaving a clean cut finish to maintain an attractive on-shelf appearance.
Payne reports a 10% increase in sales over the last year and anticipates further growth as FMCG packaging buyers recognise the easy opening benefits of Rippatape.
"Whilst brand managers want their products to have pride of place on-shelf, retailers require shelf-ready packaging that can be easily assembled," explains Alastair Murdoch of Payne. "Rippatape provides an ideal way for SRP suppliers to meet both criteria, by delivering an 'added value' solution that ensures that efficiency need not be at the expense of presentation."
Rippatape is produced from monoaxially-oriented polypropylene and is coated with a pressure sensitive water-based adhesive for good board adhesion. An extensive range of tear tapes is available to suit most applications and board grades, including solid red and white colours, printed red chevron, and customised printed designs for promotional campaigns and brand messages.
As Payne manufactures its own range of applicators, customers also benefit from a delivery system tailored to their production requirements. Options for Rippatape include the semi-automatic PRS350, designed to run at speeds of up to 350 metres per minute with fast set-up, and the Budget Applicator, a manually activated mechanical applicator which can be retro-fitted to the corrugator and laminator.
